The Kinnick Edge project will add 1,570 outdoor club seats to Kinnick Stadium. During the 2018 season, outdoor club seats will be ready for use, while construction is completed on the indoor club space. Construction will be completed prior to the 2024 season.

The Kinnick Edge project will replace the existing general admission seating bowl in the north end zone with upper and lower general admission seating bowls, two concourses, and a premium club level – the Ted Pacha Family Club.
Both concourses will have appropriately sized concession and restroom facilities. The main concourse on street level will be constructed with an open view toward the playing field. The upper concourse will have open decks at the east and west ends with views to the field and places where fans can congregate.
Between the two concourse levels, a premium club level (the Ted Pacha Family Club) will be constructed. Access to the club will be through a new skywalk, built as part of this project, to the existing West Campus Transportation Center to the north. The club will also be accessed by elevators and stairs. The club will have its own concessions and restroom facilities.

In conjunction with the UI Athletics Department Facilities Master Plan, the north stands of Kinnick Stadium have been identified as an area in need of renovation. The 30-year-old structure was not included in the 2006 Kinnick Stadium Renovation project and has received no major renovations other than the video/scoreboard added in 2013. With recent advancements in stadium facilities, the north stands structure is becoming obsolete by modern-day standards.

Kinnick Stadium, considered a “cathedral of college football” is one of the most iconic and recognizable pieces of architecture in the state of Iowa. The monumental brick arches, Juliet balconies, limestone detailing, and heraldic shields on the pennant poles create its distinctive image and allude to the grandeur of its influence from the Roman Colosseum. Careful consideration has been made to create a new design that harmonizes with the existing structure while creating a new identity for the north end zone. An addition, that modernizes the fan experience, continues to push the University forward, and adds to the legacy of Kinnick.
The existing north end zone structure dating back to 1986 does not meet today's updated seating requirements, restroom needs, egress routes or concession demand. To build a new addition that brings the north stands up to today's standards requires a much larger building. The footprint of the site is very small, pinched to the north by Evashevski Drive. To fit the new program requires a three deck superstructure that will cantilever up and partially over Evashevski Drive. While the three level structure will be a departure from the traditional single deck seating, the overall massing and materials are to be complementary to the historic stadium. Much like the press box, it will extend the historic brick language at the base of the structure. Because the upper levels must be cantilevered, use of stacked masonry here, is not practical. The proposed design takes advantage of modern materials creating a façade for the club and upper concourse that is unique to the stadium while aligning the geometry and massing of historic east and west towers. The exterior of the upper levels will be a combination of glass and architectural panels that wrap the north end to provide a windbreak and sense of enclosure for the stadium. The new scoreboard will feature a logo to the exterior and with its elevated position above the upper bowl, will serve as beacon to the north that is visible for miles.
The ultimate goal architecturally is to maintain the character and complement Kinnick's image while modernizing its facilities.
